Man attacked by shark off Northland beach

A man is in hospital after being attacked by a shark off a Northland beach.

The victim was surfing off popular surf spot Baylys Beach near Dargaville at around 6pm tonight.

A police spokesperson said the victim was a man in his 20s.

He received bites to his arm and hand and paddled back to shore after the attack.

Another man gave him a ride in his ute.

He was collected by the helicopter from outside a shop on Seaview Road, which happened to be called Sharkys Takeaways.

It is not known what type of shark it was.

The man was flown to Whangarei Hospital for treatment.

Josie Scott, whose home overlooks the beach, told NZME all the surfers had been called back in and the scene was calm.
