Man dies in extreme sport accident near Wanaka

A man has died after an extreme sport accident near Wanaka.

He was speed flying at Isthmus Peak on Sunday morning when he crashed and was critically injured. Emergency services were called at about 9am, and he was flown to Dunedin Hospital.

He died from his injuries on Sunday afternoon and his death will be referred to the Coroner.

Speed flying combines skiing and paragliding, and is considered a risky activity requiring a high level of skill. It's a relatively new sport and is popular on ski slopes around the country.

Four people have been killed in paragliding accidents over the past two summers.
