Man dies trying to save child at Hot Water Beach

A man who died on Hot Water Beach on Sunday was trying to save a child who was struggling in the water, it has been revealed.

Angelo Tuyay was a member of Couples for Christ New Zealand, which confirmed the death on its Facebook page.

"Brothers and Sisters, it is with sadness to inform you that Bro Angelo Tuyay passed away today," the post read.

"Let us all say our prayers for Bro Angelo who died while saving a child drowning in Coromandel area. Let us also pray for his family at this difficult moment."

Emergency services were called at around 4pm to Hot Water Beach, responding to reports of a male struggling in the water.

Tuyay was pulled from the water and given CPR by rescuers, but died at the scene.

A police spokesperson said his death had been referred to the coroner.
