The man who died at a Whangarei motor camp after being stabbed was expecting a child according to reports.

Police say the man arrived at the Otaika Motor Camp with critical chest injuries at 12:30am on Sunday, but despite efforts to revive him, he died at the scene.

A neighbour of the man told Stuff there had been several incidents around the neighbourhood recently and that on Sunday night they had heard yelling on the street.

They also said the dead man’s partner had been expecting a child.

Dion Jessares, who works at the Liquorland across the road from the scene, said these sorts of incidents are not common.

Okara ward Councillor Vince Cocurullo agreed but said it might be a good idea if people went out in pairs and stayed in well-lit places.

"It's generally a safe place…it doesn't matter where you go in Whangarei, it's generally a safe place," he said. "When this sort of thing happens in Whangarei, it's actually more a concern for me that it's what people perceive of Whangarei".

A homicide investigation has been launched, as police make inquiries to find out how the man came to suffer the fatal injuries.

"We'd ask anyone who was in the Otaika area late yesterday evening and into the early hours of this morning to let us know if they saw anything suspicious or that may be of interest to us," Det Insp Dene Begbie said.

A post-mortem will be carried out to find out the exact cause of death and a forensic scene examination is underway.

The Whangarei police can be contacted on (09) 430 4500 or Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
