New Zealander in Switzerland killed in base-jumping accident

A 37-year-old New Zealand man has died in a base-jumping accident in Switzerland.

The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon (local time) after the man travelled to the Stockhorn Mountain with two other people.

He got into trouble with his jump and fell in rough terrain, but authorities are unable to ascertain exactly what happened.

His companions immediately called a rescue helicopter and an alpine search was carried out. 

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of a New Zealand citizen who died while base-jumping in Switzerland," a spokesperson told Newshub.

"For privacy reasons, no further information will be provided."

An investigation has been opened to clarify the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
