'Sad and concerning': Police's plea after elderly people's bodies go unnoticed for weeks

Hawke's Bay Police have recently found two elderly dead in their homes whose bodies had been left for more than two weeks before being discovered.

They are using this as a warning to the public to check on their older neighbours.

"It is both sad and concerning to police that there are older members of the community who don't have anyone looking after their wellbeing," said Detective Mike Signal.

"As the weather gets hotter and the holiday season begins, it is a good time to reflect on friends, neighbours and family to make sure of their welfare - especially those who are known to be in poor health and living alone."

Police said that if you have an older neighbour, you may be able to play a key role in making their lives a little easier.

They advise people to do this by encouraging people to introduce themselves to older neighbours.

Building a relationship is key to making sure you are able to check on your neighbours' wellbeing under any circumstance.

If you think a neighbour is lonely it is also important to let Age Concern know so they can help, police say.
