The life of a stray cat in Kaitaia has come to a sad end after a gigantic abscess on its head exploded.
The cat was found with a massive head wound in North Kaitaia earlier this week.
A call was put out to find its owner on the Kaitaia SPCA Facebook page - however, it appeared the cat had been without one for about two years.
Many people commenting on the post originally assumed someone had hurt the cat. However Heather Smith, who runs the SPCA animal centre in Kaitaia, confirmed there was no ill treatment involved.
"His major problem was a burst abscess. It must have just exploded," Smith told NZME.

The cat was taken to Top Vets, but had to be put down due to the amount of blood it had lost.
