The family of a Dunedin toddler whose leg was broken in a hit-and-run incident are asking the cyclist involved to hand himself in.

Three-year-old Jaxxyn Scott had his leg broken in two places and was left covered in tyres marks after being run over at Dunedin's Dinosaur Park with his aunt Samantha Scott on Wednesday.

"This guy on a push bike came out of nowhere and bowled Jaxxyn completely over ... He went straight down, face down," Ms Scott told the Otago Daily Times.

After knocking Jaxxyn over, the cyclist lashed out at the boy before riding off down John Wilson Ocean Dr, she says.

She took her nephew to the doctors where X-rays revealed the breaks in his leg as well as head and abdominal injuries.

Now, Ms Scott has a blunt message to the cyclist.

"Come forward - it's unfair putting a three-year-old through so much pain."

Yesterday police put the call out to the public seeking information on the cyclist.

The cyclist, a bearded middle-aged white man, didn't stop to help the boy or give his details to the child's aunt, Acting Sergeant Steven Wykes says.

Local police want to speak with the man or anyone who saw him in the area. He is described as slim and about 170cm tall, wearing an orange or yellow top, orange or brown shorts and white shoes.

He rode a red or orange mountain bike. He'd come from the direction of Victoria Rd and continued up John Wilson Ocean Dr after colliding with the boy.

Anyone with information about the cyclist is urged to call Acting Sergeant Wykes at Dunedin Central Police on (03) 471 4800, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
