The man is recovering in Waikato Hospital after being stabbed by a home intruder early on Thursday morning, police confirmed to Newshub.

He woke to noises inside his Pukete home at around 12:30am on Thursday and found the intruder holding a kitchen knife to his child.

He attacked the intruder and there was a fight. Both men received injuries in the tussle, which was on-going when police arrived.

The 25-year-old male intruder was arrested and taken to hospital with cuts and bruises. He is now in police custody and will appear in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday.
