Labour Day is going to be hotter than usual with forecasters warning Kiwis to get the sunblock ready.

MetService is expecting the long weekend to end with a warmer than average day right across the country, with the South Island likely to bear the full brunt of the sun's rays.

There will be light cloud in the morning in western areas of both islands, with one or two showers possible for inland areas in the afternoon.

Christchurch and Dunedin are forecast to have the highest temperatures early this week, with 26 and 23 degrees respectively on Wednesday. The coolest places will be Wellington and the South Island's west coast on 17 degrees.

While the sun may subside further in the week, temperatures should stay mild.
