Wellington bus strike means big business for taxis

Taxi drivers will be out in force in Wellington on Thursday while bus drivers strike.

Drivers are walking off the job this morning and pickets are being held at bus depots around the region to protest what they say is poor pay and conditions.

Combined Taxis Wellington chair Dave Clyma told Newshub he's expecting a lot of customers.

"I think after the last experience when there was a surge in business, [taxi drivers] will certainly be out in force to ensure they're there to cover the public."

He said Combined Taxis employees will be kept updated throughout the day.

"We have increased the staff in our pool centre, we're sending out hourly bulletins to our drivers to ensure they are aware and make themselves available."

Commuters can keep up to date on Metlink's website.

Wellington drivers announced their intention to strike earlier in October. Advocates said drivers are frustrated by working conditions following the roll out of a new network in the city.

Drivers in Auckland and the Waikato walked off the job on Tuesday after negotiations failed.
