Wellingtonians will be able to explore their central city a little differently on Sunday.

The council is closing off a number of streets for a range of community events - no cars allowed.

The activities at Te Ara Tapere ki Pōneke include music, dance, street art, yoga and e-bikes.

Mayor Justin Lester says it is a chance for people come together.

"It's exciting for Wellington and a great opportunity for people to come and enjoy the novelty of using public space in a different way - we've got everything from e-bikes to try, dance, music, street art, yoga and making your own reusable bag."

The event starts at 9am and ends at around 1pm.

It is the first time the city has adopted the idea.

The streets that will be off-limits to vehicles are:

  • Victoria St (Hunter to Wakefield)
  • Wakefield St (Victoria to Cuba)
  • Lower Cuba St (Wakefield to Manners)
  • Dixon St (Cuba Mall to Taranaki)
  • Inglewood Place
  • Ghuznee St (Taranaki to Marion)
  • Taranaki St (Dixon to Jessie).

Manners St (Taranaki to Cuba) will be bus-only.
