Police have found a body in the search for Auckland woman Michelle Simpson.

The 50-year-old Waitākere resident, who has a "mental impairment", was last seen in Kumeu on Monday morning.

Officers recovered a body at a property within the search area on Thursday afternoon after two-and-a-half-days of extensive searching by Police and Land Search and Rescue teams, including an aerial search of the dense bush area by helicopter.

Formal identification has yet to take place, but police believe the body is that of Ms Simpson.

During the search police said while it was unlike her to leave the house without a caregiver, there was nothing to suggest foul play had anything to do with her disappearance.

Waitemata North Area Commander Inspector Bruce O'Brien says Ms Simpson's next of kin have been notified and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

He has thanked the Kumeu community for their help with the search.
