Former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Sir Bill English, will soon be the recipient of an honorary doctorate.

Victoria University of Wellington said the honorary degree, a Doctor of Commerce, is in acknowledgement of his "distinguished record of public service as a Member of Parliament for 27 years and, in particular, his role as a long-serving and highly respected Finance Minister".

The University's Chancellor Neil Paviour-Smith said Sir Bill had helped the country through many financial hardships during his time as Finance Minister.

"He oversaw New Zealand's response to the global financial crisis. Under his leadership the country escaped some of the worst effects of that crisis and there followed a period of strong economic performance for New Zealand."

Sir Bill studied commerce at the University of Otago and then a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English Literature at Victoria University.

Mr Paviour-Smith said he was proud to call Sir Bill a Victoria University alumnus.

"His intellect, humility, leadership, and desire to serve others has been an inspiration to many across the political spectrum.

"His enormous contribution to our political economy and distinguished public service make him a fitting recipient of this honorary doctorate."

Former Prime Minister Sir John Key received an honorary doctorate from the University of Canterbury in December last year.
