A man is in a critical condition after a police pursuit in Rotorua on Thursday night.
Police say they were attempting to stop the speeding vehicle, but when the driver didn't stop, set off in pursuit of the vehicle.
A statement said road spikes were deployed but not in time to stop the driver before he crashed into a tree.
The driver, in his 20s, was airlifted to Waikato Hospital with critical head injuries.
There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
Police say an investigation into the crash is now underway and the incident will be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
