An investigation is underway following a death at Whangarei Hospital.

Police were called to the mental health unit of the hospital at 9.52pm on Wednesday night for an unrelated incident. While police were attending the call, another patient in the ward assaulted a staff member.

The man was restrained by police and hospital staff, but became unresponsive and died shortly after midnight.

Acting Detective Lloyd Schmid from Northland CIB says police are investigating the incident and are working with Northland DHB to determine what has taken place.

"Police will be talking to this involved at the scene as well as any witnesses to this incident to establish what has occurred," he said.

A post mortem will take place tomorrow and police are providing victim support to the family of the deceased.
