Nurse left with second-degree burns after patient attacks her with scalding water

A nurse has received second-degree burns after being attacked by a patient at a mental health facility.

Graphic images of the burns posted to the nursing page Florence Smith show the woman's arms blistered and peeling due to the burns.

"The nurse in these photos was writing notes in the nurses' station Monday evening when a patient deliberately threw a cup of boiling water on her, causing 2nd degree burns and future scarring, not to mention the emotional trauma these events cause," the page said.

It added when asked about the incident, which NZME reports happened at Hillmorton Hospital in Christchurch last weekend, the patient shrugged their shoulders.

The nurse is reportedly doing well, and the Canterbury DHB is carrying out an investigation.

The incident is not the first time a mental health nurse has been attacked this year. NZME reports three nurses were sent to the emergency room in March after being assaulted by a Hillmorton patient in a drug-induced psychosis.

Mental health nurse Wendy Hamer was brutally attacked by her own patient in 2009 and has now launched a petition to try and protect herself and others.

She wants more rights for the victims of crimes perpetrated by people found not guilty by reason of insanity.
