Ōtara residents thought fatal shooting was just fireworks

A man will face court on Thursday over the shooting murder of a man found critically injured on a south Auckland street.

Neighbours have told Newshub there are gang and drug connections.

Forensics investigators were seen looking for clues around the body on an Ōtara
street on Wednesday.

Armed police on Wednesday were watching over the scene where officers found a man lying on the footpath last night with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Officers tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.

"I just heard a shot, then my mum told me, then the cops were outside," Ōtara
resident Jame-Lee said.

"My wife she heard it but she said to me she thought it was firecrackers," another resident explained.

Locals said they feel "unsafe" and "not happy" in the neighbourhood.

One person said it was "quiet as", but another Zelda Ave resident Faitasia painted a different picture.

"People running up the street, fighting, chasing their partner, crashing cars over the fence. Cops here too," she said.

Faitasia is one of several residents who have lived on the street for more than 40 years.

"We never close our gate before," she said.

About a year ago, she started feeling so unsafe her family now visits her daily.

"I check up on them because in the last year they've been worried about one particular home," Leva said.

Several neighbours told Newshub the house where the man died is a known drug spot, with vehicles constantly coming and going.

Newshub was also it could be gang-related, and that there had been tension recently between rival gangs over turf for selling drugs.

Police have not said the incident is drug or gang-related.

A 35-year-old man who is known to the victim has been charged with murder and is due in court on Thursday.
