Road markings with speed limits make roads safer - study

Speed limit signs might soon not be the only thing telling you how fast to go on our roads.

Research suggests markings that show where speed limits change could improve safety.

Samuel Charlton from Waikato University says the proof is in the pudding.

"Drivers really like having that information - because even if they missed a sign, the speed markings were continuous. You could just glance and see whether it was 100km/h or 80km/h.

The markings worked in the simulations even when road users didn't know what they meant, and were even more successful when drivers understood them. The 100km/h zone in the tests had a green centre line.

Dr Charlton says it's easy to spot the difference.

"In a 60km/h zone the edge zones are dashed and the centre line is dashed. An 80km/h zone looked pretty much as it does on roads today, with a solid edge line."

Dr Charlton says it will work better in some places than others.

"It's very appropriate for rural roads, highways. Probably downtown or in urban areas where there's not a lot of change in different speeds, it's not quite as appropriate."
