Sunday's second day of searching for a teenager who was swept off rocks near Raglan has been "unsuccessful", police say.

The 17-year-old boy found himself in trouble at Papanui Point near Ruapuke Beach around 2pm on Saturday.

Police, Raglan Surf Life Saving and Coastguard carried out a search until 6:30pm, when conditions forced them to call it off.

The search resumed from 10am on Sunday as a joint operation between the Karioatahi and Raglan Life Saving clubs. They focused on the shoreline each side of Papanui Point.

It was called off for the day just before 3pm due to tidal conditions. The search will resume on Monday morning, weather and conditions permitting.
