The woman spreading Christmas joy through handbags

For some Christmas does not always bring joy.

Every year, women living in poverty try to put the family's wish-list before their own. And the sacrifices of these unsung heroines go unnoticed.

But not on Colleen Simpson's watch.

She's collected handbags from like-minded people who want to give something back during the festive season.

And the handbags are filled with goodies - things like perfume.

"Just smellies, just nice things at Christmas time to make all women feel special."

Colleen is one of hundreds of good Samaritans lending a hand to the Handbag drive campaign which was initiated by Fran Ninow and Jude Mitchell, the editors of Verve magazine.

And, so far, 1000 bags have been delivered between Auckland's City Mission and Women's Refuge.
