A foreign man has been charged after allegedly filming women and children in Dannevirke public toilets.

The man, understood to be from Austria, was allegedly "snapped red-handed" taking a video of an eight-year-old girl in a McDonald's restaurant in Dannevirke, a witness wrote on Facebook.

Police confirmed to Newshub that a 20-year-old foreign national, who is visiting New Zealand, has been charged with making an intimate visual recording, and has been bailed to appear in court at a later date.

Lower Hutt resident Jade Clamp took to Facebook on Thursday to warn the community about the man, who he says had explicit content on his phone of his daughter using the toilet.

A woman, named Alicia, alerted management at the McDonald's restaurant after she saw "a phone popping under [and] over the other cubicle while she was with our daughter in the toilet," says Mr Clamp.

Alicia and Mr Clamp both chased after the man and Mr Clamp claims to have taken his phone to check if he had footage of his daughter.

"I couldn't believe my eyes," he wrote on Facebook.

Police confirmed the man was arrested at the McDonald's at around 2:15pm on Thursday. It's understood his phone was taken from him, as well as other electronic devices.
