Watch: Dog holds up traffic in Auckland's Waterview Tunnel

  • 05/11/2018

There were traffic woes in Auckland for a different reason on Sunday night as a dog decided to take a run through Auckland's new Waterview Tunnel.

A police spokesperson says they received several calls about a dog running on the side of the motorway and in the tunnel, which was opened in July last year.

A video of the incident shows the dog running alongside a police car as they both make their way out of the tunnel.

"It looks like some lanes were closed while we tried to get hold of the dog in the tunnel."

Despite the hold-up, the canine was safely retrieved just after 10:30pm on Sunday and the lanes were reopened, police say.

The forced reduction of speed in the tunnel may have been inadvertent good news for some motorists.

The Waterview Tunnel has a speed limit of 80km/h, and police data released last year shows they dish out a speeding fine every six minutes
