Wild rabbits are running rampant at an Invercargill cemetery, burrowing under grave sites.

It's not known how long the colony of rabbits have been at Eastern Cemetery but they have caused a stir with the local council - so much so, it plans on shooting the animals dead.

Weather permitting, The Invercargill City Council plans to kill the rabbits at the cemetery and Sandy Point. Bait will be laid the night before the shoot.

A council spokesperson told Stuff  it was difficult to know how many rabbits there were at the cemetery due to the large area.

However, the area provided favourable breeding grounds for the bunnies as they weren't often disturbed, the spokesperson said.

Environment Southland's pest strategy places onus on landowners - such as the council, in this instance - to actively manage pests.
