Dunedinites are being advised to avoid drinking from private bores, in the wake of flooding in the region.

Wild weather caused havoc on the South Island on Tuesday, turning roads to rivers. An emergency response was initiated, but closed around 8:30.

Six roads in the area are still shut due to flooding and the NZTA is warning about risk of surface water a further six.

The closed roads are

  • SH1 from Balclutha to Milton
  • SH90 at Pomohaka River Bridge
  • SH8 from Raes Junction to Milton
  • SH8 between Raes Junction to Alexandra
  • SH90 from Raes Junction to Tapanui
  • SH87 from Kyeburn to Hyde.

Civil Defence is urging people to stay out of floodwaters and avoid collecting shellfish as it may be contaminated.

Wastewater spilled over into the streets in Middlemarch on Tuesday after the intense rain overloaded the sewerage system.

Tap and Dough bistro owner Norma Emerson told Newshub she was forced to close her cafe because of the wastewater spillage.

"We can't even reach our front door to be honest, because of wastewater we believe is raw sewage," she said.
