"Yes, raumati (summer) is upon us. Unfortunately, the seasons transcend the calendar months and we are still stuck with some wet weather for now," Metservice said in a statement.
"Give it some time though, drier weather will eventually grace our wonderful land good things come to those who wait!"
A low pressure system is expected to bring humid air and wet weather across a lot of the country and inland areas are showing potential for some thundery or heavy showers.
Cooler temperatures are expected in the middle of the week, but MetService forecaster Tui McInnes said it's not expected to be freezing.
"Given it's December, cooler is a relative term, so no need to be grabbing your woollen jacket!"
Showers are expected to linger inland towards the end of the week, but coastal areas can expect the sun to finally arrive.
