Auckland Zoo has announced a stripy new arrival.

A baby zebra was born at the Zoo on Christmas Eve - the 43rd born at the zoo in its 96 year history.

But this is the first after eight years without a zebra foal.

Zoo staff do not have  name yet for the zebra and haven't said if it's a boy or a girl.

Mother and baby are doing well though, and visitors to the zoo will be able to see the foal out in the paddock soon.

"Layla, and foal are doing well, but it is early days so the team are monitoring them closely while they take this time to bond and the foal gets used to its whole new world of zebra, giraffe, humans and other creatures," a spokesperson said.

The zoo now has seven zebras including female Itika (26), male Carlo(11), twin sisters Layla and Dalia (7) and the new foal.
