A fire at a rubbish tip in Balclutha is now under control.

Residents had been warned to stay inside and shut windows, after a fire broke out at the Mt Cooee Landfill on Sunday morning.

The Clutha District Council has lifted its advisory, however part of Kaitangata Highway is still closed. It had earlier urged people to avoid the area.

"There is a fire currently burning at Mt Cooee landfill, Balclutha," the local council said in a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon.

"The landfill is closed until further notice. We advise all residents in North Balclutha to close windows immediately due to the smoke. "

Residents have been told to check the Clutha District Council website for updates.
