Police, usually the ones carrying out the stings, were on the receiving end on Saturday afternoon.

A swarm of bees about 20,000-strong descended on the Henderson station.

"They were pretty buzzed about setting up house in one of our patrol cars," police said on Facebook.

"Lucky for us there were some experts on hand. Many thanks to the local beekeepers who gave up their afternoon to relocate our little mates somewhere a bit more comfortable."

Followers were quick to roll out the B-grade puns.

"They went to make sure the offenders were behiving," wrote one.

"Police got raided by the killer bees," said another, referring to notorious south Auckland gang the Killer Beez.

"It was the biggest sting operation to date," one follower pointed out.
