A body has been recovered in a southern Hawke's Bay river.

The body, believed to be that of missing fisherman Peter Koziol, was recovered at around 2:15pm on Monday from the Waipawa River.

Mr Koziol went missing last week and Hawke's Bay Police sought information in relation to the missing 55-year-old Palmerston North man, who was last seen on Monday 10 December.

He left Palmerston North early that day and planned to fish the Waipawa River, police said.

He was last seen by the Waipawa bridge on SH2 around midday with his vehicle, a Blue Ford Falcon, which has since been recovered from the location.

The body was located approximately 1.5km downstream from the SH bridge in Waipawa on Monday, according to Det Mike Signal.

Formal identification of the body is yet to take place, but police say next-of-kin have been notified and they do not wish to make any comment.
