Chance of hail, thunderstorms countrywide today

The upper North Island could be in store for some wintry weather today, with heavy rain expected and the chance of hail and thunderstorms.

As a series of troughs move across the upper North Island, Metservice predicts "unstable conditions".

The weather forecaster said the risk of thunderstorms is moderate at this stage in Northland, eastern areas of Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty.

Thunderstorms may produce rainfall of 10 to 25mm/h and small hail.

The South Island could also be hit with severe thunderstorms in the afternoon around inland Buller and the Nelson Lakes.

Dunedin and Oamaru should have a sunny afternoon, but Invercargill, Queenstown and Alexandra can expect a few showers.
