Police have charged a 72-year-old woman with careless driving causing death after a motorcyclist was killed in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 25-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a car travelling southbound in the northbound lane of State Highway 1 near Johnsonville in Wellington.

The elderly woman will be released and appear in court to face the charges in the New Year.

An investigation into the incident is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000.

Police confirmed fatigue was a factor in the incident and advised people to ensure they're fully rested.

"Police urge people to travel safe over the holiday period," said Detective Senior Sergeant Kevan Verry.

"Please plan your journeys to include regular rest stops and be patient in the increased traffic flow over the next few days.

"You are better to arrive somewhere late than not at all."
