A scrub fire in Port Waikato has kept firefighters busy during New Year celebrations.

The blaze, which at its peak was the size of two rugby fields, was sparked by fireworks shortly after the midnight countdown.

Around 30 firefighters were sent to put out the flames on Maunsell Rd, which was close to a nearby house.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they received a steady number of callouts up until about 3am.
