Investigation launched after video of NZ man getting kitten stoned

A man has posted a video to Snapchat, showing himself and a female companion getting what he says is a "five to six week old" kitten stoned.

The video shows the woman holding the kitten still in two hands, as the man inhales from a bong then cups his hands over the kittens face and breathes the smoke directly into its mouth.

Paw Justice posted the video to its Facebook page, calling it a "disgusting display of humanity" and asking for information regarding the identities of the duo.

Since posting the video, Paw Justice co-founder Craig Dunn says the organisation has received "close to 100 people dobbing [the perpetrators] in".

The case has been handed over to the police, and Paw Justice says it has also been given information that "leads us to believe that the kitten was killed afterwards by different means".

The information in question is a screenshot from one of the alleged perpetrators' Snapchat app, with the caption "Only woman (sic) seem to make issues out of nothing. Lmfao don't care for other peoples opinions so keep it to your selfs (sic). Off to bop the kitten on the head. One less pest lol."

However, this information has not been confirmed by either Mr Dunn, or the police.

Mr Dunn says that the ideology that cats are pests is causing an "increase in cruelty".

Mr Dunn says "New Zealanders need to take [animal cruelty] seriously because of what these people can go on to do afterwards".

"When incidents like these occur, it's definitely a red flag within the community."

The SPCA told Newshub it is "taking the situation very seriously".

"Our inspectorate team has been working on it over the weekend, but for legal reasons at this stage, we're unable to make any more comment."

New Zealand Police did not respond to requests for comment.
