A man spent seven hours on top of the roof of a south Auckland house on Saturday after fleeing from police.

He was eventually removed and arrested after a tense stand-off.

Police had tried to stop a car he was driving at around 10am, but the offender allegedly ran through a number of properties in Weymouth before climbing on to the roof of one house.

The homeowners were trapped in the house the entire time and are being supported by Victim Support.

The man’s behaviour became more and more aggressive and he started to damage the roof - police then decided to act and forced him down.

He will be appearing in Manukau District Court on Monday facing charges in relation to driving offences, assault, wilful damage and threatening behaviour.
