A man who shook his baby to death will be released from prison.

Dane Anthony Blake's 15-month-old son Leith Hutchison suffered a brain injury while he was looking after him at his Greymouth home in 2015.

Blake shook his son until he lost consciousness as he wouldn't stop crying.

He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in March last year and was sentenced to five years and six months in prison.

He is now set to be released from prison in January having been granted parole.

The Parole Board's decision states Blake has "impeccable" prison behaviour and a good work ethic.

His release is subject to standard parole conditions but also includes special conditions which include not possessing illicit drugs or alcohol.

He is also not allowed to travel north of State Highway 73 (Kumara-Otira Highway) without approval from his probation officer.

At his sentencing, the judge described his son's death as an "incredible, unbearable act of stupidity".
