New Year's Eve weather predictions

The new year is almost upon us, but the weather is leaving a little to be desired.

MetService has released its forecast for New Year's Eve, along with a guide to where the sky will be the clearest.

"New Year's Eve brings a mixed bag of weather, with a slow moving front forecast to lie over the central South Island, while high pressure and westerlies dominate to the north," says meteorologist Rob Kerr.

"The sunniest weather will be in places east of major mountain ranges away from that front."

Meteorologist Tui McInnes backs up Mr Kerr's statement, saying "the best places to be are going to be places like Hawkes Bay and Gisborne".

However, Westland and Fiordland are not as lucky, says Mr McInnes, as they are "a little bit showery, little bit wet. Bit of cloud lingering around."

Mr McInnes says that Canterbury is in for a curveball.

"Canterbury plains may look nice right now, but we're expecting thunderstorms and cloud later tonight."

Auckland and Wellington are looking similar to each other, with cloud and patchy drizzle drifting in for midnight festivities.

According to Mr McInnes, "it could be a lot better - but it could be a lot worse".
