A 25-year-old man has been charged with the death of a 52-year-old man in Northland.

Police confirmed to Newshub that the 25-year-old was taken into custody following the man's death in Whangārei on Monday night.

He has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and will be appearing in the Whangārei District Court on Tuesday.

An incident took place outside Te Mai shops, near Whangārei Hospital, Detective Sergeant John Clayton told Newshub.

The victim, 52, was allegedly involved in an altercation when another man with dogs passed by and the dogs began to fight, local newspaper the Northern Advocate said.

The dog fight then led to the two men having an altercation, it's alleged.

The victim had allegedly been punched in the head and was knocked unconscious. He was transported to Whangārei Hospital but "sadly died from his injuries overnight", police confirmed.

The area where the incident occurred has been cordoned off by police and Mr Clayton has appealed to the public for more information.

Police said they are working to notify the victim's next of kin and are "not in a position to release his name".
