One person is being airlifted to hospital after a boat caught fire in the Hauraki Gulf.

Five people were on board the vessel, about 40 metres from a Hooks Bay beach.

Emergency services were called the incident just before 7am on Sunday.

A rescue helicopter is taking one person to Auckland Hospital with moderate injuries, while four people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

It is believed the fire started in the engine room and fire crews are using water pumps to extinguish the blaze.
