Rainy Christmas causing chaos across the country

Wet weather is wreaking havoc across the country as the sun rises on Christmas Day.

Flooding is causing trouble for travellers north of Auckland trying to get to the big city.

State Highway 16 at Kaukapakapa is closed near Kahikatea Flat Road, and slightly further north, the same highway near West Coast Road has been inundated with water.

The Transport Agency is advising motorists to avoid the area, or delay travel.

It's a similar situation in Waikato, where the regional council has been telling the public to be wary of flooding.

There's potential for roads to become flooded on the Coromandel Peninsula, which could cause road closures.

Regional hazards team leader Rick Liefting told Newshub on Monday road conditions could be tricky.

"You don't know what may happen and there may be slips as well that may occur in the Coromandel," he said.

Meanwhile a Christmas Eve storm caused havoc for campers in the Bay of Plenty town of Waihi Beach.

Some campers were forced to abandon their campsites as flooding rose in the area.

Ian Smith, the owner of Waihi Beach's Top 10 Holiday Resort, says people weren't expecting bad weather.

"People who are sound asleep, to get woken by a fireman in uniform, that's a bit of a fright for some of them, but most people took it really well," he said.

"The RSA opened their doors and we sent everybody up there and they had tea and coffee on and things like that."

There are currently severe weather watches in place for heavy rain for Auckland, Waikato, Gisborne south of Tolaga Bay, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and parts of Marlborough.
