Stabbed police dog Caesar had only been on the job two weeks

A police dog stabbed during an encounter with a burglar had only been in the job for two weeks.

Caesar, 20 months old, only graduated from the Trentham Dog Training Centre on December 6 alongside his handler Constable Josh Van Der Kwaak.

His wounds have been stitched up and an X-ray showed no major damage. He will go to Auckland for a CT scan in the next few days to check for permanent damage around his eye.

Northland district commander Supt Tony Hill said he was grateful for the public's help in making sure Caesar was okay.

"I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the veterinarian who assisted Caesar and his handler Const Josh Van Der Kwaak this morning - their service was simply outstanding.

"I would also like to acknowledge the victim of the original burglary complaint, who assisted Const Van Der Kwaak after Caesar was stabbed."

Supt Hill said it's hoped Caesar will be back on the job shortly. A 30-year-old man will face charges of burglary and injuring a police dog in relation to the incident.
