The dark and tragic history of the Waitākere Ranges

The Waitākere Ranges have a dark history of being the dumping grounds for bodies of murder victims.

Recently, British tourist Grace Millane was killed while holidaying in Auckland as part of her OE.

After a week-long search, her body was found in the Waitākere Ranges, about 10 metres off the main road, in the bushes.

But she was not the first woman to be found in the ranges, the unsolved murder of a 13-year-old girl killed just metres away from where Ms Millane's body was found dates back to 1976.

Tracey Ann Patient

Tracey Ann Patient was killed over 40 years ago, found strangled with her own stockings in the Waitākere Ranges.

Her body was found in a bush off Scenic Drive, the same area where Ms Millane's body was dumped.

The killer of the young girl has never been caught.

Karen Stanley-Hunt

In 1998 the body of single mother Karen Stanley-Hunt was found in the bushland of the Waitākere Ranges.

Her killer was found guilty two years after the murder, a close friend of hers named Rangitahi Dean Wilson Phillips.

The court alleged he hit her over the head with a crowbar six times before dumping her body in the Waitākere Ranges, an act he denied.

His story was one of despair, finding his friend dead in his front room he panicked and didn't know what to do.

The jury ruled dumping the body was consistent with the actions of a murderer.

Phillips was sentenced to life in prison for the murder.

Carmen Thomas

Carmen Thomas was killed in 2010 during an argument with her ex-partner over their son.

After an extensive search, her body was recovered in eight pieces, in boxes covered with concrete, buried in the Waitākere Ranges.

The location was approximately eight kilometres away from where Ms Millane was found on Sunday.

Her ex-partner Brad Callaghan was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder.
