Two people killed in Christchurch crash shortly after police abandon chase

Two people have been killed after a police chase was abandoned due to dangerous driving in Christchurch.

The crash happened at around 2:30am on Wednesday morning after police tried to stop the vehicle on Breezes Rd in Bromley and the driver failed to stop.

Police say they followed the vehicle for under a minute before it was abandoned due to dangerous driving.

It was found a short time later crashed at the corner of Cuthberts Rd and Breezes Rd. Three people were in the vehicle and two died at the scene.

The third person, a passenger, suffered moderate injuries and was treated by ambulance staff. One of the people killed in the crash was the driver.

A full investigation into the circumstances of the crash has begun and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.

The area around the crash has been closed and motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
