The country's first fossil-fuel free Santa Parade has taken place just off the coast of Auckland.

More than 30 floats took part in Waiheke Island, with Santa's sleigh having some small modifications.

"There will be walking, dancing, singing, marching floats and Santa himself is going carbon neutral," organiser Tanya Batt told Newshub.

"He hasn't got the sleigh and reindeer but he'll be carried by an electric vehicle."

Ms Batt said the community is supported the change.

"We're all fond of our tradition and the way things have been done in the past but we figured that the best Christmas gift that we could give is the hope of a cleaner, greener planet."

There will also be cyclists, scooters and horses as part of the parade. Ms Batt said she hopes other parts of New Zealand follow suit for their 2019 parades.
