Wairau Intermediate School defends itself over 'sexist' dance entry fee

An Auckland school has been blasted online for advertising a dance with a cheaper entry fee for girls, provided they bring a plate.

Wairau Intermediate School's 1980s themed disco asked boys to pay $5 for entry, and girls to pay $2 and bring finger food.

School principal Grant Murray told Newshub the difference in prices was part of a tradition in the school where each gender will take turns providing food from year-to-year.

Next year's 2019 social will have the girls pay $5 and the boys pay $2 and bring a plate. Mr Murray said it wasn't "some sexist thing" and had been going on as long as he could remember.

A permission slip from 2017 asking for the boys to pay $2.50 and bring finger food, while the girls pay $5 was provided to NZME.

Angry social media users didn't get the memo about the actual reason for the different prices and were outraged on social media site Reddit.

"Shitty stereotypes the whole way through. I have no clue who thought this up. Some 80-year-old staff member who thinks women belong in the kitchen and men belong where ever they bring in money for others," one person wrote.

"Don't know about that, but hope so. Really, really inappropriate and sad," another said.

A photo of the disco's advertising flyer, which clearly shows the different prices, posted on the school's Facebook page has garnered no reaction.
