Waitahuna local Russell Bennington captured the extent of the damage in some dramatic photos which showed his property littered with large balls of ice.

Some even tore through his roof, leaving huge holes in the plastic panel.

He didn't have much time to recover before the storm started up again in the evening, with thunder and lightning throughout much of the region.

Storms have torn up and down the country this week, with four people hospitalised on Monday after lightning struck a school in Hamilton.

On Tuesday morning there were 872 lightning strikes in the space of two hours. Auckland bore the brunt of the storm, with several schools closing and flights cancelled.
