Watch: Whirlwind captured in Wanaka

A small but impressive whirlwind in Wanaka has been captured on camera.

Reece Hallum film the weather phenomenon as he was walking across the Wanaka Showgrounds on Thursday afternoon.

He quickly grabbed his phone and snapped a video of it.

"It was almost perfectly calm, then this gust just came up and this tall column of dust  spun across the grounds," Mr Hallum told the Otago Daily Times.

In November, fellow South Islanders were stunned when a massive tornado moved through a paddock in Ashburton.

Multiple people sent in videos to Newshub, showing a towering column of air in the sky just north of the Canterbury town.

Local woman Alesha Plew says she and her husband drove out of Ashburton into a huge storm just before 4pm.

"My husband was driving and he said 'what's that?' We looked up and there was this massive tornado thing that was sucking dirt up from the field."
