Woman dead, baby injured at Matamata home

The Matamata community is in shock after a woman died and a baby was injured in a Christmas Eve tragedy.

Emergency services were called to the house on State Highway 27at 1pm on Monday. Police say a man at the property, who was known to the woman, was taken into custody.

The baby was airlifted to hospital where it is fighting for its life. A Waikato Hospital spokesperson told Stuff the baby was in a critical condition in ICU.

A neighbour believed the property was being rented by a brother and sister.

"We have seen her pushing a pushchair with the baby in it down the driveway," they told Stuff.

"They haven't been living there very long, a couple of months."

Matamata Piako District Council Mayor Jan Barnes says news of the tragedy left her reeling.

"So tragic, there is no winners in any of this - very, very said," she told NZME.

"It makes it double hard at this time of year and my heart goes out to the families, it's just tragic."
