Woman's windows smashed just days after spat with builders

A Hawke's Bay woman's Christmas has been destroyed by a brutal act of vandalism.

Moyrah Ryan Lewis and her husband had planned on retiring to her dream home in just a few weeks to live out their twilight years in peace.

But its windows were smashed just days after a spat with builders, leaving her with a $40,000 bill for repairs.

And she says before the stones were thrown, she and her husband received threats.

"We can't afford to even, we can't afford it, we don't know what we're going to do," she told Newshub.

"It was just everywhere, rocks all through the house, you could see a mad person had been through."

Ms Ryan Lewis is convinced that the damage was caused by a contractor with a grudge. The build had failed inspections and workers allegedly weren't doing the correct hours.

Fed up, Ms Ryan Lewis and her husband refused to pay the latest bill.

"One of the young guys came round to our home, threatened us and said well we'll regret it, next morning the police ring... we got all the windows smashed."

Although the windows will be covered by insurance it won't cover any of the associated time and cost blow-outs.

"It's a terrible Christmas. My husband's having mini strokes, he's really sick and now he can't use his hands properly, he can't feel his face anymore," she says.

"It's just awful, it's made him sicker and just don't know what to do now."

They already have had to make ends meet with bridging finance.

"I've been crying for days about this, I'm just out of tears at the moment, I can't do anymore crying," she told Newshub.

"This was perfect but now our dreams are gone really, what are we gonna do? I don't know."

Police are investigating reports of a man at the property on Saturday morning when the damage was done.

Newshub has approached the builders but there's been no response.
