An Auckland mother is furious her autistic 10-year-old son's custom-made bike was stolen then dumped in a neighbourhood stream.

The $1800 bike was built for Quaid, who can't ride a standard bike, his mum Cari McKinley told Stuff

"Straight off the bat, you can tell it's not a standard bike," she says.

The McKinley family had been lent the bike and were now planning to pay it forward to another needing family.

However, the bike was taken when it was left in front of their cars.

Ms McKinley posted about the theft on the Rodney Facebook page before searching for the bike herself.

She eventually found it damaged in a stream with the seat and brakes damaged and the chain soiled.

"I hope the culprits that took it would think about what they are doing," she told Stuff.

Police have been notified of the theft and a local bike shop has offered to fix the bike.
